Ceramics
Presented by the students of Art 131 and 133
Art 131 / Beginning Ceramics / Rick Mahaffey
Students first encounter with making things with clay. The projects shown are the first pieces made by students. They have made the forms at home and brought the pieces in to be fired. Later the students returned to the studio and applied glaze and the pieces were fired to near 2400 Degree F.
Some students chose to use overglaze decoration where they painted with various oxides and stains (mixtures of oxides) on the unfired and fragile glaze to create a contrasting colored design.
Art 133 / Intermediate Ceramics / Rick Mahaffey
Students learn more advanced technique for forming clay objects. In the case of the objects here, the pieces were formed on the Potter’s Wheel and then trimmed, bisque fired (first firing), then glazed and fired to near 2400 Degree F.
In Art 133 students work on refining their skill and creating forms that are more sophisticated than in earlier classes.
