Hot weather will continue through the weekend

The National Weather Service has extended the Excessive Heat Warning for Pierce County through Saturday, July 30, with very warm temperatures to continue on Sunday.

TCC’s cooling centers will close today by 5pm, as campuses will be closed for its normal summer operating hours, starting Friday and through the weekend. There are plenty of other cooling centers throughout Pierce County, and Pierce Transit is offering free rides to the centers.

The National Weather Service is predicting extreme heat this week in the Seattle-Tacoma area. Students, staff and faculty invited to keep cool at the Tacoma and Gig Harbor campuses, along with your friends and family members. The college has opened several cooling centers in Tacoma and Gig Harbor and a mist tent set up on the Tacoma campus.

In Tacoma:

• Students who need a cool and quiet place to study are invited to head to the Building 16 Info Commons when the temperature soars.
• Students, employees and their friends and family members are invited to head to the Building 11 Student Center.
• On the way to and/or from campus you can also cool off in the mist tent, which will be set up near the center of campus.

In Gig Harbor:

• The Gig Harbor campus will also be open for a cooling center for students.  

The cooling centers will provide a low-temperature environment and cold drinks.

Campus Safety staff and other EMT-trained campus members will be available on campus and by phone to identify potential cases of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

A few things to note:

• • The Building 16 Cooling Center is for current students who want to work in a quiet space only. Friends and family members are encouraged to go to Building 11.
  • TCC does not allow animals in buildings, except for service animals. Please leave your pets at home. Here are safety tips about caring for pets during hot weather.
  • If you have COVID-19 symptoms, including fever, sore throat, cough, body aches, and other symptoms, please do not enter the cooling centers.
  • The cooling centers will be opened as the heat rises on a given day and will remain open until 5pm. On especially hot days, the cooling centers will coincide with regular college hours, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. or otherwise as needed.
