Andre Jimenez Selected as 2021 Truman Scholar

TCC alumnus and employee Andre Jimenez as been selected as one of 62 Truman Scholars for 2021. Created by Congress in 1975 at the behest of President Truman, the nationally competitive scholarship program identifies and invests in college juniors entering public service. Jimenez was selected from a pool of 845 nominees from 328 institutions, and is one of three Truman Scholars from the University of Washington.

According to a press release sent out yesterday by the Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation, Truman Scholars demonstrate outstanding leadership potential, a commitment to a career in government or the nonprofit sector, and academic excellence. Each Truman Scholar receives funding for graduate studies, leadership training, career counseling, and special internship and fellowship opportunities within the federal government.

Jimenez currently works in the TCC Foundation. He is also a TCC graduate and current UW student, on his way to law school and a career in policy reform, legal advocacy, and/or elected office. In addition to school and work he keeps busy as as Student Leadership Council Co-Chair of the University of Washington’s Global Honors Program, and as a Commissioner on the City of Tacoma’s Human Rights Commission.

“I’m honored to represent Washington as a Truman Scholar, and specifically Tacoma, and the TCC community,” Jimenez said. “Communities that have invested and poured themselves into me both as a student, and now as a staff member.”

The 2021 Truman Scholars join a group that has grown to 3,384 awardees since the scholarship was first awarded in 1977. The group includes members of Congress, members of the Supreme Court, and national policy advisors. Congratulations to Jimenez on this incredible achievement.
