The need for Communication Studies as a discipline, particularly in cultural and small group settings, is becoming more evident in America. The broad nature of our curriculum provides relevant training and knowledge surrounding the messages we are constantly receiving, and I am a firm believer in what it can accomplish. I feel that learning is something that we do together and happens as a relational accomplishment—it is co-constructed among both teacher and student in our face-to-face and online classrooms, and other small group environments. This course is a study of culture through inclusive methods of communication, focusing on bringing the lived experiences and contributions of all people into dominant culture narratives.

As your professor, I am here to learn with you and help you experience success in this course. My research interests include areas of media studies, and critical cultural study. My current work involves exploring how we are bombarded with divisive messages—particularly in the political and social arenas. Furthermore, I have a particular interest in how mediated messages-particularly the rhetoric of identity and politics--affect perceptions of gender, sexuality, race, ethnicity, and socio-economic status. I strive to help others understand how to recognize messages that are fraught with fallacy and bias. I have taught courses in the discipline of Communication Studies for many years and I continue to enjoy learning from my students.
