Math Placement

What is ALEKS?

TCC uses the ALEKS Placement, Preparation and Learning (ALEKS PPL) Assessment to determine readiness for mathematics courses. ALEKS PPL is an adaptive web-based program that can map a student’s strengths and weaknesses. The Placement Assessment has up to 30 questions and generally takes 60-90 minutes to complete. After taking the Placement Assessment, an individualized Prep and Learning Module is available for students to refresh their knowledge on forgotten topics. Students then have the opportunity to reassess and improve their placement.

ALEKS consists of three parts:

  • An initial placement assessment.
  • The Prep and Learning Module (This is individualized to your mathematical needs)
  • Access to 4 additional attempts at the placement (if the student is unhappy with their initial placement)
Note: TCC requires that students spend 3+ hours, depending on which attempt, in the Prep and Learning module before re-attempting the placement assessment.

Because this program is very adaptive to your mathematical skills, it is very important that each student gives an honest effort so that ALEKS PPL can correctly reflect the current level of knowledge.  There is no benefit to cheating on the assessment – in fact, this can result in the student being placed into a course that is too advanced and compromise your academic success.  As such, you should not consult any outside sources for help (ex: friends/family, internet searches, textbooks, etc.).

How Do I Take the ALEKS Placement Assessment?

Students will be taking the assessment remotely using their own device with Internet capabilities for placement.  Below is a step-by-step process:

Required Materials:

  • A device with Internet capabilities and meets the system requirements (ex: computer/laptop, tablet, etc).
  • Pen/Pencil and paper. ALEKS has a built-in calculator program. No other calculator should be used for best evaluation of your skills.
  • Your TCC ID# to expediate placement in the system once you have scored at your skills level.
  • Optional: A notebook for the Prep and Learning module for self-learning.

Taking the Test:

  • When you Click in the Blue Box at the end of this information you will enter the ALEKS System. You will be setting up your ALEKS log-in. This log-in from the TCC Website is where you will enter when doing modules after the first evaluation. At this point to Log into the ALEKS system and you will pay a $22.04 fee directly to the ALEKS system. (Includes a possible 5 official tests, and online study system, 6 months of access to the study system)
  • Click on the ALEKS Tile
  • Take the ALEKS tutorial and answer the survey questions
  • Take your initial assessment (no more than 30 questions).
  • Once finished, ALEKS will show your score and resulting math placement! If you are unsatisfied with you placement or would like to improve your placement, you must spend 6 hours in the Prep and Learning module before taking the second assessment again (see FAQ Item “What if I am not satisfied with my initial placement” for more details).
  • You’re done! Please note: Scores will be entered into TCC's system and can take up to three business days.

Next Steps:

  • You will receive an email of your math placement within three business days after taking ALEKS.
  • Once you have received your placements (math and English), your next steps is to contact Advising.
